The Sioux City Public Library’s summer hours have begun. The Aalfs Downtown Library will be closed Sundays for the rest of the summer and Sunday hours will resume after Labor Day.
All locations will be closed on Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day.

April’s Open Book Club: Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke
The great German lyric poet Rainer Maria Rilke published his first collection of poems in 1898 and went on to become renowned for his delicate depiction of the workings of the human heart. Drawn by some sympathetic note in his poems, young people often wrote to Rilke with their problems and hopes. From 1903 to 1908 Rilke wrote a series of remarkable responses to a young, would-be poet on poetry and on surviving as a sensitive observer in a harsh world. Those letters, still a fresh source of inspiration and insight, are accompanied here by a chronicle of Rilke’s life that shows what he was experiencing in his own relationship to life and work when he wrote them.

April 7th Movie: This 1971 film (Rated R) is set in 1951, and tells the story of a group of high schoolers who are coming of age in a bleak, isolated, atrophied North Texas town that is slowly dying, both culturally and economically.

Calling all scallywags to report for Pirate duty at the Library! We'll spin tales, sing sea shanties, and practice our seafarin’ skills! Afterwards, make a fun pirate craft and follow a treasure map to find the loot! Don’t miss out, or you’ll be saying “AAARRRGHH!”
Summer Internship Opportunity at the Sioux City Public Library!
Attention high school* & college students! The Sioux City Public Library is seeking an energetic person with a passion for literacy and a desire to share their enthusiasm for reading with young people in our community to serve in the Library's Youth Services Department as a Student Intern. The internship will run from approximately May 27th through August 1st, 2025. *Must be at least 16 years old to apply.
