Donating to the Friends of the Library Book Sale

The Sioux City Public Library is not currently accepting donations.

The Sioux City Public Library is pleased to accept donations for our annual Friends of the Library Book Sale. Most items sold at the Book Sale begin as a donation, and proceeds from the sale support the Library’s collections, services, and programs. You can find the answers to commonly asked questions below.

The Friends of the Library Book Sale would not be possible without your donations and the generosity of our volunteers who help staff the event.

What can I donate?

We welcome the following items:

  • Books – fiction and nonfiction, for children and adults, paperback and hardcover
  • CDs and vinyl records
  • DVDs

Items not accepted:

  • Magazines and newspapers
  • Condensed Books
  • Textbooks and encyclopedias
  • Materials with damage, including tearing, highlighting or underlining, water damage, mold, odors, or insects
  • Dirty materials including dirt, grime, pet hair, etc.
  • Household items or other non-book donations

Where can I donate?

Small donations (under 3 small boxes or bags) may be dropped off at our Aalfs (Downtown) Library at 529 Pierce Street during normal business hours.

Large donations (more than 3 small boxes or bags) are taken by appointment only Monday – Friday between 9 am-12 pm, and 1 pm-5pm. Please call the Aalfs (Downtown) Library during business hours, 8 am – 5 pm, to schedule your drop-off. (712)255-2933 ext. 2251

Donations must be boxed or bagged before dropping off. Containers will not be returned to the donor.

Is my donation tax deductible?

The library staff taking your donation can issue a receipt but you must supply the number of hardback and paperback books and the number of other items to receive the completed receipt. Library staff are not qualified to determine the value of your donation. Your tax preparer can help you with the amount.

Who can I talk to about donating to the Book Sale?

Please call the Library’s Administrative Office at (712)255-2933 ext. 2251 with further questions.
