The 2008 One Book One Siouxland grand finale weekend kicked off with a City-wide rocket launch on Saturday, April 26, at West Middle School. Nearly 50 people came to launch rockets, including some who brought the rockets they had made at the public libraries.

Having discussed the 1950s memoir, Rocket Boys, by Homer Hickam, Jr., in private book clubs and public coffee shops and libraries throughout Siouxland, the 2008 initiative culminated with the showing of October Sky at the Orpheum Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27. Scores of people attended the showings.

Roy Lee Cooke, one of the original rocket boys, was in Sioux City both days. Rocket Boys fans enjoyed visiting with Roy Lee Cooke at the Orpheum between showings.

Fans of the Rocket Boys also could meet Roy Lee Cooke at the South Sioux City Public Library on Saturday, April 26, and at The Wilbur Aalfs (Main) Library on Sunday, April 27. He gave a talk, "Aiming for the Sky," at both locations.
