winterFEB1National Celebration Inspires Local Programs

We're celebrating Take Your Child to the Library day on Saturday, February 1, at The Wilbur Aalfs (Main) Library, 529 Pierce Street. In the spirit of the Sochi Winter Games, Family Storytime, at 10:30 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m., will include the opportunity for kids to enjoy some indoor Winter Olympics fun.  At 2 p.m., we're showing Miracle, the inspiring movie of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey team’s victory over the heavily-favored Soviet team, starring Kurt Russell. Remember, downtown parking is free every weekend.

“We want to encourage parents to think of the Library as a fun place to enjoy with their children,” says Children’s Librarian Jeanette Bobeen.  2014 marks the third year—and the Sioux City Public Library’s second—for this grassroots celebration of Take Your Child to the Library day. The event started in 2011 when a Connecticut librarian adapted the slogan from a bookstore ad.  Spreading quickly through social media, participating libraries this year hail from across the United States and from Canada to the Caribbean.

“Why bring your child to the Library? Research shows that the first years of life are the most crucial for brain development and literacy preparedness,” says Bobeen.  “Public libraries offer programs and services that support a child’s growth and development at every age.  Take your child to the Library—on February 1 and every day.”
