Children and parents are invited to join Martha, star of public television’s “Martha Speaks” for a special storytime on Thursday, April 24, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Wilbur Aalfs (Main) Library, 529 Pierce St., Sioux City. Martha will be available for photos following the program.
This free program is presented as part of a partnership between the Sioux City Public Library and IPTV’s Ready for School Initative, which has provided books, DVDs, I-pads and training to local organizations, preschool teachers, and parents. The Sioux City Public Library received 15 DVDs for circulation.
“Martha Speaks,” based on the books by Susan Meddaugh, is an animated series on IPTV designed to enrich the vocabulary of 4 to 7 year olds. Each episode uses Martha’s unique linguistic abilities and the hilarious consequences to engage children and help build their vocabulary skills.
“Children can’t use words they have not heard or seen in print,” says Jeanette Bobeen, Library Youth Services Manager. “Learning new words prepares preschoolers to be readers themselves. We like to introduce at least one new word (and how to use it correctly) at each Library storytime. That won’t be a problem with Martha, who is outspoken, confident, smart, and has an amazing vocabulary!” Join us on April 24 for lots of word-building fun!
