Friends of the Sioux City Public Library The Friends of the Sioux City Public Library is an independent, non-profit, volunteer organization comprised of people who use their library and take pride in it. It is dedicated to promoting, improving and assisting the Library by providing financial support for Library projects and activities and sponsoring the Library's annual book sale. The Friends supply many of the "extras" that enhance library service and improve the quality of life for everyone. This year the Friends contributed over $13,000 to the following: Incentives and prizes for
children participating in summer reading programs Members automatically receive the Library's newsletter, Book Remarks, in the mail. For more information about the Friends call (712) 255-2933 x 251. Membership options include $5 for youths under 18 and seniors over 64, and $10 for adults. A Proud LegacyWhen Library supporters formed The Friends of the Sioux City Public Library in 1965, their first gift was a bookmobile. They also operated a used book store, The Book Cellar, for a number of years before it evolved into the annual Book Lover's Book Sale. The Friends organization cosponsored an annual spelling bee with The Sioux City Journal for nearly twenty years, and established the Library's Dial-a-Story service that played 8-track tapes. Over the years they provided financial support to begin and/or expand the Library's video collection, the music-on-compact disc collection, CD-ROMs for children, and books-on-tape for all ages. The Friends commissioned the mobile "Oculus" and the 1990 commemorative poster for The Wilbur Aalfs Library. They funded the first two Apple//e computers for public use and a Mac workstation. A motorized cart for mobility-impaired patrons and a portable display unit were funded in the early 1990s. Support for children's programming is evident in such gifts as a portable sound system, a video projector, the Mother Goose Wall, and ongoing incentives and books for summer reading participants. From furniture and meeting room equipment to multi-volume reference sets and bi-lingual books for people whose native language is not English, the Friends continue to provide the "extras" that enhance Library service. Book Lovers' Book SaleThe Friends of the Sioux City Public Library sponsor an annual used book sale each spring; proceeds benefit the Library. |
